Which is better: Broadband or Fiber Internet?

Are you confused between the two terms Broadband and Fiber? Let’s first discuss these two things and the functionality of these in internet connections.

Broadband is the system that transmits the internet from one hub to the user's device at a fast speed to qualify as a broadband connection.

It was not until 2007 that broadband service was made public, and it suddenly became the biggest thing of that time. Since 2007, more than 4.5 billion people have had access to the internet because of the introduction of the broadband system to transmit the internet to places.

There are various types of broadband connections for the internet, each with its specs, perks, and disadvantages. So shortly, broadband can be considered the mechanism by which the internet is provided to a user.

Fiber or Fiber Optic Cable is a type of broadband connection. Fiber optics are what revolutionized internet connectivity further to the next threshold. Information in a fiber optic cable is sent through really minute shards of glass or plastic. Though the process sounds pretty familiar as copper cable, the truth is different.

In a fibre optic, the data is transmitted at a speed that is just 70% less than light. And if you ask me, it is still much faster than any other pre-existing procedures.

Also, the bandwidth of the internet carried over fiber broadband is much higher as well, giving you a non-lag experience.

The fiber optic internet is also invulnerable to any external issues as the connection is initiated underground.

So, What Did We Learn?

Broadband is only the system that carries over the internet at an excellent speed to its users. And Fiber is one type of broadband connection that is fast and reliable even at the time of a storm.

Types of Fiber Optic Broadband Connection

As per FCC regulations, there are three types of Fiber optic broadband connections. Here is the list, features, and specs of each of the types of high speed fiber internet connections.

  • FTTP/FTTH: This is called Fiber to the premises or Fiber to the home, which stands for FTTP or FTTH. This type of broadband internet is delivered directly to your home, avoiding the involvement of any copper cables. Thus you will be receiving the best quality of fiber connection now to your device. This is the sort that delivers up to 800mbps with each connection.

This connection mode is 30 times faster than even its own counterparts.

This is further sub-categorized into two types FTTH and FTTB. They are the same in terms of function and speed, and stability. It is the last mile coefficient that differentiates the two.

  • FTTB: FTTB stands for Fiber to the building. It is exactly what it stands for. This fiber connection extends to a building and every section of it. Thus the optic cable is intersected by the coaxial cables or copper cable to make it reach the destinations for the connection.

The application of this category for fast fiber broadband is more practical. FTTB is popularly used for schools, offices, banks, hospitals, or any other place that involves using the internet on multiple devices.

We may see the fiber pathway intersected in the last mile of the connection by the copper cable or coaxial cable. The speed of the internet transmitted is still fast enough to consistently meet the needs of more than a hundred users at the same time.

  • FTTC/FTTN: FTTC or FTTN stands for Fiber to the cabinet or neighborhood. This is the best fiber broadband network system for use in bulk and in a cheap way too.

What happens here is, that the Fiber is extended to the location, and the last mile is arranged with coaxial cables linked to the service provider. Thus, it is like a normal ISP scheme but with the speed and quality of fiber optics. Though the speed sometimes decreases, nothing on a dramatic level.

Which One's the Best?

Among the three types of high speed fiber broadbands, all of the three are the best in terms of the purpose they are used for; as three of these have a high bandwidth with a consistent download and upload speed, segregation really depends on the purpose of use.

FTTP is best used in a personal setup. FTTB is more practical to use in organizations. FTTC is the cheap access to the fiber optic quality of the internet that can be used collectively by a neighbourhood.
